What Is Genre?

Today we learned about Genre, here is my summary of it

Genre: A genre is a group or category of different media texts, these genres can also have sub genres or hybrid genres also exist.

Genre convention: Things that are frequently used or tied to a genre, like ghosts are tied to horror movies, guns in action, and so on.

The game I will be talking about is Red Dead Redemption II.

Game Trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmA6MrX81z4

   - Red Dead Redemption II is mainly a Western themed game and has other aspects such as being a Shooter Game, Action-adventure, and also heavily story-based, with it possibly being one of its best aspect. The game definitely conforms to the typical conventions of Western themed media texts, such as cowboys, sherrifs, small towns, saloons, bandits, bounties, and those typical things.
   - I think its for a mature audience like teenagers all the way to full grown adults, this is mostly due to the fact that the story was very dialogue based and heavy, which younger audiences may find pretty boring, there's also some violence in it, a bunch of it, a lot of it, so I think it's not really for the younger people.

Research

This is the research for my ad project

STA Travel Ad

Who is the target audience? (demographic/psychographic)
- I think this ad is targeted towards people of a somewhat younger age, maybe late 20 to mid 30s, and towards those who are more active and enjoy activities that are more lively and has more things to do and see. it's also perhaps for those who like to explore and adventure places outside of urban areas, because of this it's probably for those who are more healthy or fit. I think it isn't necessarily targeted towards a certain gender.

How is this audience usually targeted?
-  This audience is usually targeted by showing places that has more activities to do such as exploring things, and maybe also showing things that are more lively or loud rather than places that are mundane.

Did this advert conform or subvert the normal way?
- I think it conforms.

What images/locations were used to appeal to the audience?
- The places like the cities, the party, and the one scene where he was probably in a stadium of sorts likely appeals to the target audience aswell as the mountain at the end. The person in the video being a man at possibly a younger age and has a clean appearance could also appeal to the audience as it makes the video in someway happier.

What sounds/music were used to appeal to the target?
- The video used a sort of upbeat and maybe dramatic piano music that could maybe make the audience and target excited and feel optimistic about travelling.

Who is the target audience? (demographic/psychographic)
- I think the ad is targeted towards married couples, or families with kids of younger ages such as toddlers. I think it's also for parents who are stressed out from work and are in need in a sort of break from work or just their usual lives and such.

How is this audience usually targeted?
- People of this audience could be targeted by showing vacation spots that are less crowded, less loud and has less people, because of this they might be shown places that are relaxing or calming such as beaches.

Did this advert conform or subvert the normal way?
- I think it conforms.

What images/locations were used to appeal to the audience?
- The images of the children and the woman could make the intended audience feel like they relate to the video. And although only shown for abit, the picture of the beach and the video of the family perhaps walking around the beach could intice them as it seems calming and a good place for a family bonding sort of thing.

What sounds/music were used to appeal to the target?
- Although not much music was used, I think the audio of the clock ticking could somewhat urge them to book a travel and the voice of people speaking could also make them relate to the video and so might make them feel like they'd really need to travel.

Who is the trarget audience? (demographic/psychographic)
- I think the ad is targeted towards families with parents who are still somewhat fit, and younger children or just children in general who enjoys activities such as being out in the open and exploring especially in nature, or places that aren't heavily urbanised in general,

How is this audience usually targeted?
- I think this audience is usually targeted by showing places outside of major cities, mainly places that are widely open and has alot of green in it, and places that aren't too crowded. This audience could also be targeted by showing activities for the children to do too.

Did this advert conform or subvert the normal way?
- I think it conforms.

What images/locations were used to appeal to the audience?
- The ad shows places that are open, green, bright, and just mainly focuses on the nature aspect of the destination to make it seem more beautiful and comfortable to visit. The video also shows a happy family in it which could in a way brighten the videos mood and appeal to the target audience.

What sounds/music were used to appeal to the target?
- The video uses a sort of exciting, upbeat or hopeful music for the background and I think it makes the audience feel excited about the destination.

Who is the target audience? (demographic/psychographic)
- I think the video is targeted to a very wide variety of audience however I think it mainly focuses on age groups of young adults. The ad also focuses on people who are active and enjoys to explore both nature and also cities and lively places aswell.

How is this audience usually targeted?
- This audience is usually targeted by showing places of nature and has alot of places to go to and explore and see such as animals and natural sights, for example they could be inticed by places like forests, beaches, cities, and so on.

Did this advert conform or subvert the normal way?
- I think it conforms.

What images/locations were used to appeal to the audience?
- The ad video shows alot of natural places, for example it shows many forests with big trees and also beaches, both of which shows alot of animals, the video also shows alot of natural sights in general which could interest the audience. However, it also shows some cities in Australia which could also interest people who likes to explore urban areas.

What sounds/music were used to appeal to the target?
- The video uses the voices of different people singing and the song in general is pretty upbeat and exciting which could make people interested and excited in visiting the destination

Who is the target audience? (demographic/psychographic)
- The target audience are families of younger and fit people and children, as well as people who like to do outdoor activities that are quiet physical. The target audience are also those perhaps who like to hike more specifically and sight see.

How is the audience usually targeted?
- By showing places that are far away from urbanized areas and densely populated, they like to be shown mountainous areas and stuff that has a lot of nature and sight seeing places.

What sounds/music were used to appeal to the audience?
- Upbeat music to reel in the audience and get potential customers.

Self Reflection: I will admit doing the research was pretty tough for me, I felt like I knew what I wanted to say but didn't know how to, every word was like at the tip of my tongue but couldn't come out, even then it didn't feel right and I just didn't feel satisfied or proud about the things I managed to write. Despite this I think the research did help me with my project in some ways, I guess it allowed me to see many tourism ads and gave me a sort of guideline of what the project ad should be like. Next time I think I'll try to actually do the research when I should instead of the night before when everything was due, I'll also try to take much more time, thinking over what I should write, how and why and stuff like that, hopefully I'll do much better when the next project comes around.

Me(Actor, Storyboard)

Self Reflection: Overall I think this group was alright, we got most of the basic needs done and I think most of us excel at what our roles were (editors especially) so I guess that's a positive, however I will admit that sometimes the group lacked cohesion and a proper leader??? In some sort of way so there are cases where we got confused of exactly what to do and why, we also lacked some concrete plan sometimes, some plans and ideas we made were foggy and weren't ACTUALLY a plan so I guess there's that. In general the group was flawed, in many ways, but it isn't that bad, though i find it hard to give any major compliments, surely sometimes due to my fault I guess.

As for me personally, I think I did alright and was pretty comfortable with my role as an actor since the acting was pretty much straightforward and simple, no crying and stuff needed, though I will say that my second role as the one responsible with the storyboard wasn't something I'm comfortable with though, the role was pretty much just thrown at me because of a running joke of me "being bad at drawing but really liking it" so yeah, at the end I kinda struggled to really make the storyboard and actually make it understandable, I would be lying though if I said I didn't enjoy some parts of it, I like drawing and Im not good at it, but the storyboard pretty much gave me a reason to draw something regardless, who knows, maybe I'll get into drawing, bittersweet and double-edged sword in the end I guess.

Week 2:

- Throughout this week, we learnt a few new things. One of which was Semiotics, this could possibly help me during my project as it can help me decide what will be put in the scenes of the video, how we will angle it, and why we would do it that way. We also learnt about code which is everything media texts of a certain genre has in common, like what is often tied to it, I think in a way this could help us decide how to make the video according to our target audience. We also learnt about demographic/psycographic, this could help us really good idea of how we can group our audience, such as according to different factors like age, hobby, etc. Finally, as far as I can recall we learnt Genre, this'll possibly help us decide what type of video we want to make.

Week 3:

- Throughout this week I didn't learn anything as I pretty much missed out the entirety of the week. However I do understand that statemet of intent is basically what we want to show or do for the ad and our thought process, and that is about all I can say.

Week 4:

- Throughout this week we learnt a few things, since I missed out on a lot last week I finally got to learn alot baout camera movement and angles, this can help us decide the position and movement of our camera when we make the video. We also learnt about sound, what it effects and how it effects things, we learnt things like diegetic sound(characters can hear), non-diegetic sound(characters can't hear), and trans-diegetic sound(bitta both), we then learnt about melodic(happy), discordant(sad), and contrapuntal(doesnt fit) sound, this'll help us decide what audio to include and add into the project depending on what we emotion and feeling we want to go with.

- We also learnt about things like storyboard and script which can help us decide the flow of the project ad and what order we want it to go in. We then learn about statement of intent, is self-explanitory, its basically what we want to do, we can't change it once we're done with it. Then we learnt about risk assesment, which is basically what we'll use to note the risk and benefits of the location we'll us, this'll help us outweigh and compare the benfits and risks of the location for the project

Week 5:

- This week we learnt mise-en-scene and editing. With mise-en scene it'll help us decide what things to wear, include like props and lighting, costumes, and stuff which can hopefully help us set the tone and mood of the video, and overall just make it feel more complete and fitting of what we're trying to do. As for editing I think it's very self explanitory but it'll be very important, I missed almost the entirety of the editing class due to ANBK but with the knowledge we gained from the lesson we can polish, clean and overall just make the video good to see and watch.

- Today we started with out filming schedule, basically it'll let us well schedule things we will watch, we will list down the scene numebrs, when we will shoot, where, who and the equipments and props we will use and include.

- This is the Fimling Schedule :https://www.blogger.com/blog/post/edit/2754003770830426800/3785506246281152091

Week 6:

- This week on media studies we learnt about media theory, these included David Buckingham and Steve Neil. David Buckignham states that a media text must be similar enough to be consdiered as a genre but also different and unique enough for the audience to find it new and exciting. Steve Neil states that media text changes to cater societal and technological advancements, this includes things like better representation in movies due to the higher demand and awareness of it in society, as well as technology because tech is getting techy as years go on.

Week 7:

- This week on media studies we learnt about 2 new narrative theories, these included Levi Strauss and Barthes. Levi Strauss's theory is called Binary Opposites, this theory basically explains that in order to forward a story, there has to be conflict between 2 sides but at the end one of them must prevail, this includes bad vs evil, corrupt vs pure, and so on. Barthes's theory includes 5 different codes, these include Hermeneutic, Proairetic, Semantic, Symbolic, and Cultural codes, each having their own different roles in media.

- Aside from that, this week my group did the major bulk of our actual shooting which we did in Sanur beach and around its area, it was alright to say the least, we had Gusde help us shoot and was pretty much our creative advisor and stuff, he did alot for our group so kudos to him. With most of the shooting done hoepfully our ediotrs could work with the footage and get it polished and some of it ready for next week.

Week 8:

- This week we spent all the classes editing and working with our actual project and I can say that this week is also where I spent most of the time working on my blog. I will admit that I am much far behind the schedule of what I have to get finished, so I'll need to work on it quick.

Self Reflection: I can't say exactly that having a weekly progress helped me thoroughly or I guess in a majro way, but I think for some reason writing this kinda made me feel better, this blog is pretty much life a conversation with myself and like a reflection I guess, I felt like I was recalling, remembering, and just reexplaining things to myself so in a way it helped me refresh my mind and just explain things in my own words which helped me, so I guess in the end this weekly progress sorta played a major role. Despite this I'll be honest, in some cases I ususally rushed to fill in the weekly progress since it's at the end of class so I didn't really take it seriously, but now looking back I think it'll be a good idea if I actually just take time to do it so for the next project I'll try to do it seriously two fold.

Project Brief

Here is the brief for my tourism ad project

Self Reflection: I am kinda excited and kinda nervous too since this is the first time I've ever done a project at this scale, (having to travel, take time during my weekend, thoroughly plan, etc.) so I guess it's something to look forward to, not really too, I hope all goes well.
