Statement of Intent

This is the Statement of Intent blog for the Comp 3 Project.

Self Reflection:
Initially getting the statement of intent was a great challenge as I had anticipated. Although we had already decided what genre we wanted, everything else such as the choice of song and artists were only still whispers and half baked ideas we threw around for the sake of getting something in the table, it was pretty confusing to narrow things down due to a difference in choices, the year limit, among other things which somewhat set us back abit. However fortunately afterwards, when we had decided on a concrete song and idea, things got much easier and smoother since Gusde already had somewhat developed visions for it and all we needed to do was expand and refine it. I'm not sure how much we'll use this statement of intent, however considering the teachers soon to come efforts to have it on our table every project lesson, I'll probably at the very least remember our general goal, though I'm not sure how much of this I'll follow throughout the project.

Pre-Production: Genre Research

This is my Pre-Production: Genre Research blog for the Comp 3 project.

Red Yellow and Blue Retro Music Club Trivia Night Game Presentation by Sagara Awatara

Self Reflection:
I believe I made this research much much harder than it's supposed to be. Although we were given a rather generous timespan to do it, I kept pushing back when I will actually try to complete the research, aside from that there were other activities that hindered my ability to actually focus on the research like assessments or classwork for other classes. As a result I felt very rushed trying to do this, and have been somewhat unable to really look back through all 6 researches in depth, I think I could've done better, and I wish I continued the momentum of doing and prioritizing tasks as I did for the last project, but what's happened has happened.
I think I went overboard with my writing, it has alot of words, is dense, and I believe riddled with unecessary words, which at this point is no surprise to me. As such I might've spent far too much energy and time in some research, all for it to contribute nothing to my research and its meanings, thus having no benefit on my grades.
Finally, this whole analysis of music videos is very similar to what we've been doing with film openings and such, but music videos have abit more to unpack in a shorter video, it was hard to spot out editing and sound/audio aspects in depth since I rarely do in my research. I do however felt somewhat more comfortable when having to decode meanings and representations, it felt abit more natural and has more liberty to some extent.

Week 1:

- This week was our first week back into school, and more importantly media. We were placed into our randomized groups in tuesday, though that became a point of friction and reconsideration due to disagreements with members and genre chosen for each groups, I ended up moving to a different group and unanimously agreed on rock/alt rock as our genre, we started our early dive and prelimnary research into MVs where we are introduced to the different genres and its conventions. We also got back into studying media theory, in this case we got into Media Ecology, which is a study of how media interacts, influences, and evolves eachother, society, and culture.

Week 2:

- This week we began to do our larger scale genre research, in which we had to resarch and analyze 6 music videos that relates to our intended genres with great depth and detail, as usual these kind of tasks are daunting to me as there's a lot to do and I tend to do poorly with this and with time management, but we are given a generous amount of time so it should be fine for me, However it's been made more difficult since we had to put aside time for yearbook and graduation photoshoots. I'll have to manage my time well and do this quickly before the deadline, but not too much where I get burntout and result in a dip of quality in my writing.

Week 3:

- This week we continued with our genre research in class, the deadline is fast approaching by this week and I am very far behind with only having done 2 out of 6 so I'll have to set aside a lot more time to finish it, I faced quite abit of diffculty trying to find a song I like and relating to my intended genre so It'll take much more time than I'd like it to. This week we returned to audience values and discussed how it has changed throughout the years, particularly in areas of representation.

Week 4:

- This week we were given much more tasks for our MV project, particularly the statement of intent and storyboarding + lyrics. Doing the statement of intent took quite a long time since we had difficulties finalizng our music and artist choices, determining the representations, conventions, audiences, and also supporting them, it was especially difficult in determining our artists persona since it's something new but after a short lesson relating to it we managed to complete it with relative ease. The storyboard + lyrics was also pretty difficult as it took a lot of creativity and at times we didn't know the speicifc details of what will happen in each scene, but after further discussions the members responsible for it managed to do it just fine. For theory we returned to gender theories (Judith Butler, Laura Mulvey, Van Zoonen), we also had to practice university level text anaalysis where we had to read an article and analyze it claims, research, and challenge it with our own opinions.

Week 5:

- This week we continued with more project tasks of moodboards, storyboard + lyrics, and location scout + risk assessment which is what I'm responsible with, the location scout was very straightforward as it just relied on deductions and common sense but it was somewhat difficult to choose our locations, I didn't really actively participate with the other tasks but I did give occasional inputs. We also had a short preperation lesson for our upcoming assessment next week where we had to analyze our previous writings which relates to media ecology, I felt like the lesson wasn't too helpful, I still feel lost and unconfident for it so I'll have to study more on my own.

Week 6:

- This week we spent pretty much every lesson doing theory work, every pre-production related tasks are due next week on monday but considering we have pretty much everything done it shouldn't be too big of an issue, we've largely finished things like the Loc Scout + Risk Assessment, Moodboard, Storyboard, Lyrics, and I also finished an individual classwork where we had to ana.lyze the real and reel personas of our chosen artists, I chose Liam Gallagher of Oasis. We also also finished our UA, s expected I didn't feel too confident about it and felt like my writing lacked everything possible to score good marks, but as it turns out I got a very good score, though now I fear I've wasted all my luck on this single assessment, which is worrying considering we have exams coming up real soon. This week we had our last media lesson on thursday since next week every day which has a media lesson is taken up by galungan holidays, I'll have to prepare and study for the exams on my own, and my group will have to complete everything in our own time.

Semester 2

Week 1:

- In the first week back to school we were primarily given a task of creating a mindmap which surrounded our band's identity, persona, goals, etc. It is tied to the branding of our artist, it took quite sometime to figure things out since up till this point most of our plans weren't written or solidifed rather they were fragments, but this task made us really consider it so that's something I'd consider  a benefit from it. Following that in theory class we learnt a new theory called "Theory of Stardom" by Richard Dyer, it primarily looks into how and why artist brand identity and personas are formed and how almost all of them are constructed for a reason rather than just being "natural", I think it'd help us really consider how we want to present our artist and I'm also considering how I can make it so it'll be easier to explain and connect in my CR.

Week 2:

- This week we were more or less continuing the preexisting tasks in terms of our project, however we were given a new one of creating a audience feedback form where we'll have to create specific and useful answers that audiences will fill in once they watch a clip of our music video which is still in progress, I think it'll be useful as outsider opinion can always be appreciated and may offer insight we never really considered. Regarding our project, I'm starting to get slightly worried since the deadline is creeping closer day by day and yet my group is still remaining inactive with the only thing we've shot so far being the band scene, we have yet to shoot anything regarding our narrative and plot. In theory class we were taught a new theory that being the "Post-Colonial Gaze" which is basically a compilation of how western media portrays themselves as strong and positively in media to make up for the territories they've lost in the colonial era, this theory primarily links to the power and the media topic, I personally really like this theory so far as it has very slight hints of history into it

Week 3:

- This week for project lesson we used for some sort of unit assessment where we had to write around 2-3 paragraphs of an exam style question and answer, I felt as if I didn't do all too well but I'll excuse myself for now since its the first media essay after the long break, but I still owe myself to meet my expectations that I set myself. We learnt a few new theories this week in some form of theory dump which were the "Theory of Fandom" which involved fandoms, fans, and the types of them, and we also learnt about "End of Audience" which essentially states that audiences are no longer passive and actively engage in media but most improtantly hold the artists to some form of standards and expectations.

Week 4:

- This week in school has entirely been used for project lessons, through this week our negligence and procrastination finally met up as while the other groups has been wrapping up their edits, we had to rush shootings and editings meaning there were alot of compromises made and most importantly we have very little time if at all to fix any major mistakes made.

Self Reflection:
- A lot of things went on in this semester, and unfortunately not all of them are good or are things that I am proud of.
- The groups inactivity throughout the holidays would eventually catch up with us later on in this semseter and term, we didn't discuss anythig during it and when we did shoot, we only shot one scene (the band scene) before again we were mired in activity, procrastination, and comfort knowing we did one scene. We only really got hit by reality in the week of the due date where the group finally got our gears running and did a lot of work, if only we did it in the weeks prior we could've done much much better, but at least we got things done.
- When the group were serious and got deep into our work, I felt really confident in everyones capabilites, thankfully we were able to finish our work before the due date and managed to get some feedback from the teacher. All there is to do after submission is the CR, which I am definitely excited for.
